Abstract
"This
work is meant to debate in three chapters over one of the most
exploited literary genres – the gothic genre- and also over one of
the best represented literary figures and characters – the gothic
other.
In terms of purpose and structure, the first chapter of the work
intends to make a presentation of the gothic’s genre history, to
effectuate a “mise en revue” of the so – called “Gothic
Other” and to make a general presentation of the work’s subject –
the gothic’s other – the vampire ( history, legends, myths,
facts, its representation in literature, movies etc ).
The first chapter is, logically, followed by a second one, which
offers a detailed presentation of one of the oldest and most
classical vampiric figures in literature : Bram Stoker’s Dracula
(including subchapters regarding the representation of the main
character, Gothic elements, fiction vs facts ( whether Bram Stoker's
inspiration starts or not from the legendary Vlad Ţepeş ) etc ) .
The third chapter serves a detailed presentation of another literary
masterpiece - Anne Rice's The Vampire Chronicles ( subchapters
presenting the vampire under another light, a modernised one,
different from Bram Stoker's, Gothic elements etc ) .
There
follows, of course, a series of conclusions drawing the evolution of
the vampire from ancient to modern times or, otherwise, from the
classic to the modern vampire.
The main purpose of this work is to analyse the changes occurred
within this particular Gothic Other, along with the passage of time.
Otherwise, its intention is to intercept the vampire’s evolution
from the classic Bram Stoker to the modern Anne Rice and the
differences and similarities between the two representatives of the
Gothic Other, as it is obvious that Anne Rice’s Lestat de Lioncourt
was created starting from Bram Stoker’s Count Dracula but was added
modifications due to the necessity of being in step with
contemporanity."
Argument
"The
main reason for having chosen this theme is my growing interest in
everything related to gothic literature and, particularly, in the
vampiric figure. And I consider Bram Stoker’s Dracula and
Anne Rice’s The Vampire Chronicles representative not only
for the gothic literature itself, but also for the universal
literature, as they both stand for undoubted literary masterpieces.
Other reasons are consisted in the mystery that surrounds this gothic
other and the controversy it has been raising for centuries. Also,
over the centuries, many debates over the origins of the vampire have
taken place and this work intends to demonstrate, among other facts,
whether for these two prolific gothic writers, the legend of Vlad
Ţepeş served as an inspirational point or not, since I find this
topic controversial and fascinating altogether." __________________________________________________
